Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) released the following statement after voting against the House Amendment to the Senate Amendment to H.R. 5746, the text of which was released with an hour's notice before its consideration in the House Rules Committee last night.

"The ability to vote is one of the most precious rights American citizens have. But rather than working with Republicans on solutions to preserve this right and protect the integrity of our elections, Democrats once again chose to politicize the issue and sow deeper division," said Cole.

"If enacted, the Democrats' latest scheme to federalize elections would irrevocably alter how states oversee and operate their own elections, as they have done historically. The result would be an unprecedented power grab by Washington that would completely change the character of elections as we know it, including requiring states to provide automatic and same-day voter registration, requiring vote by mail and early voting, overriding state voter ID laws and establishing a new taxpayer-funded campaign ATM that would ensure certain candidates to receive millions of dollars in federal taxpayer dollars."

Cole also made remarks during the Rules Committee's hearing on the legislation last night. Video is available here and transcript here
